Conscious moral reasoning functions not as an impartial truth-seeking judge, but as an ad-hoc defense attorney—a post-hoc rationalization mechanism engineered to justify the pre-reflective alarms of our evolutionary behavioral immune system.
As we navigate an increasingly polarized socio-political landscape and confront breathtaking advances in biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and genetic engineering, the lessons of Wheatley and Haidt’s work are more urgent than ever. Recognizing the fundamental unreliability of the “yuck factor” and understanding our immense vulnerability to moral confabulation is the essential first step toward true epistemic humility. Only by acknowledging the somatic and evolutionary origins of our moral convictions can we design the judicial, political, and cultural institutions necessary to liberate human ethics from the blind tyranny of the gut, forging a society grounded in empathy, rigorous harm evaluation, and genuine rational deliberation.
