Researchers Eva Nieto McAvoy, Jenny Kidd, and Bethan Jones argue that while tech services promise to overcome mortality, they instead deliver an unstable, fragmented simulation of identity that converts human remembrance into a precarious commercial product.
The Rise of the AI ‘Deathbot’
A burgeoning marketplace of commercial services—including platforms such as You, Only Virtual, HereAfter AI, Almaya, and Seance AI—now promises to reconstruct deceased individuals from their digital footprints. By aggregating text messages, voice recordings, and social media archives, these systems train conversational agents to mimic the communicative mannerisms of the dead. Some platforms even offer anticipatory services, prompting living users to curate and edit the digital avatars their families will encounter after their death.
Unlike traditional memorial practices such as photographs, letters, or headstones, deathbots attempt real-time dialogue. According to the study, this shifts the paradigm of remembrance from passive legacy toward an approximation of resurrection, aligning with the speculative ambitions of transhumanism. By assuring customers that they “never have to say goodbye,” these commercial tools frame death as a technical problem solved by real-time software animation.
The Illusion of a Unified Digital Self
Through platform walkthroughs and discourse analysis, the researchers examined how these companies conceptualize personhood. Proponents frequently claim their algorithms preserve an informational self, achieving a form of digital immortality. Yet the authors found that these systems do not reconstitute an authentic, coherent individual. Instead, a person’s digital identity is dispersed into partial, unevenly distributed traces across disparate corporate servers.
This synthetic presence is also infrastructural fragile. A deathbot relies entirely on server uptime, ongoing software maintenance, and corporate profitability. If a provider changes its terms of service, undergoes an acquisition, or goes bankrupt, the simulated persona risks sudden corruption or total erasure, threatening the bereaved with an abrupt secondary loss.

Interacting with an interactive avatar produces what the authors designate as a “contested presence”—an experience that is emotionally compelling yet ontologically uncertain. Rather than communing with a conscious entity, users must undertake significant psychological labor during bereavement to sustain the illusion.
Surviving relatives must constantly reconcile automated algorithmic outputs with their living memories, bridging awkward gaps when conversational outputs feel generic or slip into the uncanny valley.
